Bringing words to life

Happy Monday, friends. ☺

On Friday I mentioned that I thought my weekend would be busy, and I was definitely right! I missed my Saturday and Sunday posts because of it, and I'm glad to be back today. I hope you all had a great weekend.

Today I'd like to highlight one of my favorite poets, former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. Like my all-time favorite poet Ted Kooser, Collins writes about everyday life in a very conversational and accessible way. Bruce Weber of The New York Times once called him "the most popular poet in America."

I began reading Collins' poetry a couple of years ago, and during my research, I learned that several artists have worked to create animated videos of some of his poems, bringing them to life even more vividly than the poet's words alone. I'd like to share one of those short videos with you today. I hope you enjoy it.

(Animated by Julian Grey of Head Gear Animation. You can find the poem here.)

Wishing you all a fantastic Monday. ☺

Note: For some reason, Blogger is not allowing me to respond to all of the comments on this post. I appreciate them very much and will be visiting each of your blogs during the next few days. Thanks again.

  12. Thanks for the introduction to Billy Collins and the video. I used to store lots of everyday stuff in my 'Memory BrainBank', but these days my PHONE seems more reliable...omg, that's so scary. A.G. Bell must be spinning in his grave, but at least my BrainBank is less cluttered with phone numbers...making room for more useless information and 'Catch Phrases' like...YOU'VE BEEN BLITZED!!!

  29. Great of you to highlight a poet that's getting some exposure through another medium. Maybe this other outlet will open up people towards poetry. Poetry is important in our lives, but as straight poetry (usually someone standing in front a microphone and reading) it doesn't get the love. With some outlets, it can broaden its reach. Thanks for posting!

I, too, like to read and interpret poems rather than have someone else interpret them for me (however that person does that), but I think that these animations bring poetry to people who might otherwise be afraid of it, and I think that's important.

  55. Hi Dana, Good poem choice. So loaded with sadness, at least for me. I watched my husband's parents and sister as their brains were slowly eaten away by senile dementia or Alzheimers. I'm not sure what the difference is but, at least in his mother's case, it left her with the knowledge that thoughts were missing, and that she couldn't find them. This poem reminds me so much of her--a very sweet woman who always sent a care package home with us, and in the end was leaving half eaten ice cream sandwiches in her bedside drawer and hitting people with her purse because she didn't remember who they were. So very sad.

Ah well, on a brighter note, Happy Blitz Day. It's good to visit your blog and I'll be back!

  65. Monday has not been good, a bit like the weekend, Friday one of my cameras went down so I ordered a new one of Amazon which came the next day but it must have been a warning as my hearing has gone in one ear (water), I got covered in oil from the lawn mover, shower door came off on me when I wet to have a shower after and today I found the caravan had not go everything done when it came back from service. To top that I found out waste companies rip you off to take the stuff away. Hope yours went better than mine. Video you posted was good, lot of work went into that.

  137. Happy belated blitz!
I think I've only ever read one or two Collins poems before. Will go discover more!

  138. I see what you mean about his tackling common every day things, like memory, lol! I can relate. But mine is still good--with a few lapses when I get busy or have a stack of things to do. Wait, I have it on my list...um, anyone seen my list?

He's not a poet I've read a lot. Thanks for bringing him back to mind. :-)
