Stand

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I'd read The Writer's Desk by Jill Krementz, a book of photographs of authors in their writing environments. As I was going through the book, I was surprised to learn that several of the authors prefer (or preferred, in the case of the writers who have died since the book was published) to stand while writing, leaning against lecterns or high tables and usually utilizing a notebook and a pen or pencil. Although I do tend to pace the room and read out loud as I edit, except for jotting down notes or bits of dialogue I've never written while standing; I've always sat at a desk or table or maybe on the couch, my computer in front of me or a notebook in my lap.

I'm curious now. How do you write? Do you ever stand, or do you find that you're most comfortable sitting (or even lying) down?

  1. I usually sit in my chair with my laptop in my lap haha. When I write by hand, I often just sit with my binder in my lap, in the same chair. So there isn't anything special that I do haha.

  2. Andrew, I don't do anything special either, which is why I was curious when I noticed that several of the writers in the book stood--or sat on countertops or lay in bed... Maybe they have bad backs? ;) I've been thinking that I should try standing--it might be the key for getting me out of my slump!

  3. I often sprawl out across my bed on my belly for blog writing, but I prefer to be sitting upright at a desk. I actually tried to write while standing in wait of the locksmith today, but I failed abysmally--hence, sitting down photo! I remember I wrote a fair portion of TMD's sequels while standing on the train in Japan, but I have a hard time imagining I'd feel so comfortable now. :p

  4. Deb: I think sitting upright is the best option for me, too!
