"I often lay on that bench looking up into the tree, past the trunk and up into the branches..."

I chose today's photo not because it's particularly beautiful but because I like the composition. It's the trunk of a tree as seen through the slats in my neighbor's fence. I like the perspective—the way either the tree or the fence stands out to the eye, depending on which one you choose to focus on.
Wishing you a Tuesday filled with unexpected surprises. ☺

I took these photos of an airplane's contrail just after sunrise one morning a couple of months ago. I always enjoy seeing the patterns these streaks of water vapor leave in the sky. What I like most about these photos, though, is the softness of the colors. It was a beautiful morning.
Wishing you all a lovely Tuesday. ☺

I'm sure most of you know by now that I love photographing trees, particularly winter trees. I love the shapes their bare branches make against the sky. These trees always seem to have so much character; I'm sure they have stories to tell.
Wishing you all a beautiful Tuesday!

Wordless Wednesday
"I never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted, they travel about as far as we do. They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far!"~John Muir

Those of you who have read my blog for a while probably know I have a fascination with the grandeur and character of old trees. I have that same fascination with old buildings. I took this photo last weekend when my family and I went to look at the Christmas trees a local Boy Scout troop was selling in the parking lot of a Methodist church here in Western New York. I was hoping to capture the stateliness of both the tree and the church.

Look up!
I said those words to my three-year-old daughter last week as we were waiting for the school bus to bring her brother back home from kindergarten. Ever since I was a kid, I've thought that the best view of a tree was found by looking up through its branches, especially at this time of year, when the leaves have mostly fallen, leaving dark limbs silhouetted against the sky.
Yesterday was sunny and bright, a perfect day for gazing at these tree-skeletons, so I went outside with my camera and snapped a few shots. The first two are of the only tree in our front yard. There's something so dramatic and regal about it. I'm sure it would have some stories to tell.
The next shot is of my neighbor's trees. I love how delicate the branches seem, lacy against the sky—living poetry.
I'm sure it's no surprise that autumn is one of my favorite seasons. What do you enjoy most about fall?

It endures
Today's 100 words:
When I was growing up, I could look out my bedroom window and see two nearby trees, one a cherry and the other some sort of pine. The cherry tree was old and had all the character that old trees possess: crooked, perfect-for-sitting-in limbs; peeling bark; an aura of history. I knew as I looked at it that it had seen many things as it bore its fruit year after year. The pine was younger. I had watched it grow from small to suddenly tall, a sentinel beside the shorter cherry. That watchful pine is gone now, but the cherry endures.

Perspective
This morning's 100 words:
After dinner last night, as the kids played in their sandbox and I sat in a patio chair, watching them and reading, I did something I've since realized I rarely do: I looked up, and for the first time I really saw the sky, the robin's egg blue of it, its never-ending vastness awesome yet comforting at the same time, a mother folding her arms around her child. Birds soared, ascending through the blue, and squirrels leaped from tree to tree, dappled sunlight playing across their bodies.
Last night I realized how small I am.
