Look up!

I said those words to my three-year-old daughter last week as we were waiting for the school bus to bring her brother back home from kindergarten. Ever since I was a kid, I've thought that the best view of a tree was found by looking up through its branches, especially at this time of year, when the leaves have mostly fallen, leaving dark limbs silhouetted against the sky.

Yesterday was sunny and bright, a perfect day for gazing at these tree-skeletons, so I went outside with my camera and snapped a few shots. The first two are of the only tree in our front yard. There's something so dramatic and regal about it. I'm sure it would have some stories to tell.

The next shot is of my neighbor's trees. I love how delicate the branches seem, lacy against the sky—living poetry.

I'm sure it's no surprise that autumn is one of my favorite seasons. What do you enjoy most about fall?

  1. I love this time of year as well, when I walk my dog round the park I spend most of the walk staring at the trees; some with no leaves, some with a few still hanging in there and some that don't lose their leaves at all. They're all beautiful to me.
And the favourite part for my dog is all the leaf piles on the ground, perfect for him to run through! :)

    1. Lovely! You've made me want to take a walk. :) If only I didn't have so much Thanksgiving cleaning to do...

      Have a happy day!

  2. You made me want to get my camera out and take some pictures of our giant maple tree! Besides the obvious beauty of fall, I love the coziness of it as well. Sitting by the fire, reading a book.

I love that autumn smell! I miss walking in the woods. I grew up in a rural area and used to look forward to those walks every fall.

  5. I was watching leaves fall this weekend. It was so wonderful, like snowfall. I love that we never get bored of nature's beauty. I've been watching leaves fall for thirty years, and I still get excited.

  12. If I wasn't stuck in a walking boot that leaves my foot soaked, I would usually say puddles of rain. Autumn in Washington is wet and I love that! Love it more when I'm wearing two real (waterproof) shoes!
