This really takes me back...

Happy Tuesday!

Recently, I heard Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," and I was immediately transported back to 1984. I was twelve and starting the seventh grade, nervous, I'm sure, about all the changes life would bring now that I was attending classes in the high school. (Our high school and junior high students shared the same building.) It was a year of many firsts: first school dance, first "boyfriend," first kiss, first taste of independence... I don't think I'd ever want to go back to those years, but I'm happy to say I lived through them. ☺

What song takes you back every time you hear it?

Wishing you all a Tuesday filled with wonderful memories. ☺

E is for Entertainer

I'm a writer and stay-at-home mom now, but in my adult years I've also held the jobs of journalist, college English professor, and freelance copy editor. These professions were all good fits for me, but they are definitely not what the child-me thought she'd be doing when she grew up. Back then, I told people I wanted to be an archaeologist or maybe an orthodontist, but what I really wanted was to become an entertainer--specifically a singer like Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. I do love to sing, but I have to admit that I'm very happy with my non-famous, ordinary life and can't imagine living any other.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same job you're doing now?

Klangfarbenmelodie*

Today's 100 words:

Once, I wanted to be a singer. I grew up idolizing Cyndi Lauper and Madonna, and although I could never consistently carry a tune, I still wanted to be just like them. I even gave two of my Barbies their names, something my sister probably wished had been her idea. I'm from a small town, and my much older brother said I could stay with him in Chicago so I could have "proper" voice lessons, but my parents declined. Sometimes I think my brother, dissatisfied with his life, wanted me to be famous so he could live vicariously through me.

*I'd never heard of this word before today, but I chose it for my title because I liked the sound of it. According to Wikipedia, Klangfarbenmelodie is "a musical technique that involves distributing a musical line or melody to several instruments, rather than assigning it to just one instrument, thereby adding color (timbre) and texture to the melodic line."
