Okay, I confess

New Journal, I need you not,
but oh, the possibilities!
I took my daughter to storytime at Barnes and Noble yesterday, and while we were there, I bought a new writing journal.

I don't need a new journal—I already own more of them than I can count; in fact, another recent purchase is sitting on top of the printer right now—but I was drawn to it somehow, I suppose in the same way that moths are drawn to flames, lights, and my pita sandwich (long story).

Anyway, this journal is small and serious and "writerly," and I knew when I saw it that I had to have it. It joins a family of several others, many of which I haven't written in yet for fear of "messing them up." Instead I do most of my writing on the computer or in cheap, spiral-bound notebooks, the kind the big-box stores sell for nineteen cents apiece when school begins each fall. For some reason, though, I keep buying journals.

Clearly, I need help.

Tell me I'm not alone. What's something you just have to have, even though you don't really need it?
