The one where I flay myself

I am an accident waiting to happen.

Finger? Apple? Who can tell the difference?

It's true. Last month I wrote about the undeniable fact that I'm a klutz, but what I did to myself yesterday goes beyond that, even for me.

Picture it: Western New York, my kitchen. I had just finished making egg salad sandwiches for the kids, even managing to cut them into triangles successfully (i.e. without slicing off any of my limbs). The house was peaceful, the kids watching TV in the living room and neither fighting nor whining for their food. Satisfied with the sandwiches, I turned to the day's fruit, a lovely apple. I washed it, dried it, then, remembering that my two-year-old dislikes the peel, I reached for my potato peeler and began stripping away the skin. All was well--until it happened:

I mistook my finger for the apple--and I peeled it.

I know, I know. Disgusting, you say. Believe me, you're not wrong. I'll refrain from posting a picture.

(You're welcome.)    ;)

Yes, he may look innocent enough lounging there among
the potatoes, but don't be fooled. That peeler is pure evil.

I'm still not certain exactly what happened, but I do know this: that peeler is pure evil.

Of all the klutzy things I've done in my life--slicing off the tips of several fingers with kitchen knives; walking into walls, counters, and tables; tripping over toys, coffee tables, and nothing at all; falling down (and up!) stairs, and more--taking my skin off with the potato peeler ranks right up there with the most uniquely interesting ways I've hurt myself.

And frankly, it makes typing really difficult.

What's the most klutzy thing you've ever done?

  2. Oy! I had a knife accident a few years ago - chopping onions at my sister's house with a razor sharp knife. I'm so ultra careful now because of that.

But my klutziest thing was tripping on a sidewalk grate in downtown Atlanta. I stumbled and stumbled and as I was going down, I thought, "This is going to be bad." When I turned around and sat up, I was looking a sea of legs. A group of professional women were walking up the sidewalk and saw it happen and were leaning over me. I managed to not break anything but my sunglasses (and pride), but banged up my face, shoulder and knee. Awful and embarrassing. :)

    1. Yikes! That sounds like a painful fall. Glad you didn't break anything.

  3. OWWWWWWCH!

When I worked for a bank I managed to get myself into a position where my head got hit by the safe door. Once people stopped laughing I got some sympathy. Not much, but some.

  4. I too am awful when it comes to knives. I've even sliced open my thumb when washing them. I've also managed, more than once, to cut myself with a melon baller.

We're having a dinner party in a few weeks, and I know, without fail, I'm not getting out of it without a few cuts and burns.

  5. Ouch!! Hoping for quick healing!! I bumped into the wall the other day; I'm sure it must have moved during the night or something because it sure didn't seem like it was right there the day before :) I'm always spotting some bruise that I can't remember where it came from :)

have an injury free day today!

  6. Ouch! That's too bad! A little bit ago I cut the tip of my finger with a knife! It hurt so bad! Hopefully your cut heals quickly! :)

    1. Finger wounds are the worst! They take forever to stop bleeding, and since we use our hands so much, they're always getting bumped around (as I'm sure you know). :)

Thanks! I hope yours heals quickly as well!

  7. Ew. I cut a fingernail tip off right into a tossed salad. It was great fun looking for it.

  9. Oh, I am in agony for you! That sounds perfectly horrible and I'm sure it will take a long time to heal. My worst that I can remember was chasing my oldest through the house because he was in trouble and running from me - a bad combo. And he had spilled water on the kitchen floor and the two tile steps that went into the sun room. Which I didn't know about until I ran into the water, falling in a very awkward way down the stairs and onto my knee and leg. Obscenities were screamed, pain shot endlessly from my limbs, and I had the hugest, most painful bruise on my calf for over two months. In summertime. Lesson? Let your in-trouble kid come to you, in fear, rather than chasing him through an obvious IED-laden home.

  14. Ack! Ouch! You poor dear. I'm overly careful when it comes to peeling and cutting things. Usually I just leave it to my husband, because he's even fearful that I'll cut something off! I've fallen down stairs due to my klutziness.

    1. Lucky you! I wish I could get my husband to do all the peeling and chopping. I love cooking, but I could do without all the injuries.

Falling down the stairs--yep. I've done that many times, and so has my five-year-old. Ouch!

  15. OUCH! I've done that too and fallen up the stairs. I think the most klutzy thing I've done is when I don't quite open the cupboard/closet all the way and smack my head into it as i'm looking for something.

    Hope your finger heals quickly.

  16. Seriously? This isn't the first time you have done that, is it? I grew up peeling ten pounds of potatoes almost nightly (big Irish family - rarely a dinner w/o potatoes) and peeled my finger about once a month. And, sadly, I still manage to do that even if I only peel potatoes once a month these days!

    1. It is indeed. :) I've hurt myself in many, many ways, but up until yesterday, I'd never peeled my finger. Cut it? Yes. Burned it? Of course. Stabbed it, skinned it, jammed it against something? Yes, yes, yes. But peeled it? No.

Sorry to hear you've done this, too. It's painful!

  18. Oh no, that hurt soooo much! I hope it heals fast! The klutziest thing I have done is mis-step on a step and break my foot. That put me out for quite a while and if I'd not been rushing....

    1. Thanks!

I think that's my problem most of the time: I rush. I'm always in a hurry to get things done so I can move on to the next thing. Bad idea, I guess. :)

  19. Ouch! I can't believe you did that!

  20. Cripes...I just reached into the drawer one day and sliced myself open on the peeler. Those things are wicked sharp.

  21. I'm cool with knives, peelers, grapefruit spoons... But if you can believe it, I am actually not even allowed to *touch* the cheese grater! It does not matter how big the block of cheese is, or how intentional I am, I WILL slice myself on it. So my husband has to take it in and out of the dishwasher, and if I need to grate something and he's not around I have to use the food processor. I totally feel you on the klutz thing :P

    1. The cheese grater is bad news for me, too. I only use it if I absolutely have to. :)

  23. Oh my goodness, ouch! I'm a klutz too. I cut myself four days ago at work, opening the air charger on a bottle of whipped cream. Yesterday, I cut the same finger in the same spot with the same thing. And it's infected. Oops. At least I have some angry birds band-aids. Hope it gets better!

  24. OUCH! I feel your pain! I've done that too. But, worse, I've cut my finger deeply while chopping onions. The kitchen really is a dangerous place! I think angry bird band-aids would be a hoot! Use your injury as a reason to stay out of the kitchen for a few days. :-)

  25. I just knifed myself to the bone around Christmas. But the worst thing I did was at a job working nights, tired, accidentally got a couple fingers smashed in a roller (that had no guard on it, but should have)--pulled quickly--ripped all the meat almost off of my middle fingertip. Got it sewn back on, but they made me wrap it and work cleaning presses where it was 100 degrees (like a hothouse for bacteria), got a raging infection--and it went on and on. No union. They kept making me do things I shouldn't. Didn't like the doctor and the specialist saying I shouldn't be trying to work yet--so they sent me to a couple different doctors till one said it was all in my head. Made me keep going to him.

Lost most of the grip in my hand so tried to use my palm more (lifting 50-150 pound rolls of paper), wrecked the muscles in my wrist over time--bleeding in my wrist under the skin--shredded them, I guess--and they kept making me use it (or they said they'd fire me with no workman's comp and I lived alone and couldn't use one arm). Reinjured it five times doing what they told me--until it encompassed muscles in my whole left arm and I now have a one pound limit on it, can't grip, push, pull, lift with any strength or for any length of time. Can't even hold a book to read--have to have it on a pillow or something--and even holding the book open without gripping I can only do for so long with that hand. I have learned how to mostly type with my right hand. Etc...etc...

I hope you injury heals well and fast! :):)

I have done other stupid things, but that is the worst accident I've ever had. Wouldn't have been such a big deal at all if they had just given me time to let the initial injury heal and they had listened to the first three doctors and specialist. Duh!

  26. Oh where to start...so many stories, so much klutziness to share...I guess the worst was falling off a chair and breaking my wrist to smithereens. Chair. Falling off. Not, "I was bungee jumping" or "I was climbing Long's Peak" or even "I was longboarding" which is how my 15 year-old broke his arm in April. Nope. Just an embarrassing story about a stupid klutzy move. Note to others: when sitting on a stool, and others join your table, don't try to be nice and scoot over to make room for them. Get OFF you chair, move it, then get back up. Sigh. Those interested in hearing the whole sordid tale (and there are plenty on my blog) here's the chair one:

  27. my klutziness rubs off on my children. when one was 2, i was reaching w/the hose of the vacuum into a crevice with the bottom raised and my son reached out to touch the spinning bristles! yowch!

other not proud moments, shutting my car door on my dog's tail =(
and backing out of the garage into a visiting friend's car, not once but twice (many years apart & different friends) ah well...

Last summer, my husband backed into a telephone pole at my friend's house. (It's in a really bad spot.) I drove into the side of my dad's garage when I was a teenager, and another time, my mom's friend and I backed our cars into each other at a church. Ugh. I hear you on the car stuff. LOL

  29. I'm not entirely sure how it happened, but I'm currently sporting a large gash from the shower faucet. I'm not sure what went wrong. One second I was turning off the water, the next my hand was bleeding all over the shower. I guess the pointy part that indicates hot or cold is a lot sharper than I thought!

I hope your finger feels better soon.

  30. I keep telling my husband I'm psychic, but I have to keep proving it. I told him I had suddenly gotten frightened of the spring that pulls up the garage door. Why? I dunno, but the day he finally decided to check it, it twanged out into space and nearly decapitated him. THEN I mentioned I've been leery removing hot things from the oven. He laughed. I was in the process of pulling out a heavy roasting pan and both handles snapped off. I just missed scalding both legs!

  31. I've cut myself SO many times, it's a wonder I'm not missing a few fingertips. I have a peeler that always takes some of my skin off with it when I'm peeling potatoes. It's the weirdest thing.. I should really get rid of it! I tend to chop veggies or slice raw meat much too quickly and have cut myself so often, it's scary. I have to keep telling myself to focus and slow down! I also tend to burn myself on oven racks. Thankfully, skin heals!
