Five things I learned yesterday

"What did you learn today?"

I ask my son that question every day when he gets home from kindergarten, and since he's only five, he actually answers me—although I suspect that when he gets a little older, the always-popular "nothing" will be his go-to response. ☺

Yesterday, as he told me about all the things his teacher had taught him, I started to think about the things the day had taught me. Although my new knowledge might not be as exciting as my son's, I do learn a few things every day. Yesterday taught me that:

1. I don't have to give up on a recipe like this one just because I'm out of cream of mushroom soup. Instead, I can make my own. It's easy to do, and there's no worry about canned soup and BPA.

2. Sometimes it's just too cold outside to make the effort to go to the grocery store, even if I really, really want chocolate.

Squirrel?
3. It's fun to discover animal tracks in the snow. (My kids taught me this one!)

4. It's heartbreaking to see a Facebook friend receive happy birthday messages from people who don't realize that she recently died.

5. The new season of Project Runway starts tonight! (I'm a little excited. Can you tell?)

What things have you learned recently?

Wishing you a wonderful Thursday!

Online privacy

Today's 100 words:

For many reasons, I choose not to post pictures of my kids online, so when other people post pictures of them on their Facebook pages without asking me first, I get upset. I understand that many people have no issue with posting photos online, and I respect that; it's a choice, and all parents need to decide for themselves what's best for their family. I've received some flack for my opinion. People (including someone close to me) have called me paranoid and overprotective, but I can't let those words bother me. I need to do what I feel is best.

An unfortunate tradition

Today's 100 words:

It occurred to me when I looked at the date this morning that the countdown to Christmas has truly begun, and I'm starting to feel a bit of panic. When my sister and I were on Facebook last night, chatting as we each wrote Christmas cards, she told me that she had finished all her shopping last Monday and asked if I was done yet. My answer? "Hahahahaha. No." It seems to be my (unfortunate) tradition that I finish most of my Christmas preparations at the last minute, so I fully expect to be buying and wrapping presents right up until the moment Santa arrives.

Stalker

Today's 100 words:

He'd been stalking her Facebook page for more than a year, checking every day to see what she was doing and who her friends were. Each time he breathed a sigh of relief to find that she didn't appear to be dating anyone. Even though they hadn't been together for years--even though he was now married--he knew that seeing her gush about another man would crush him.

He was right. Last week he saw those words, felt her excitement through the lines. His heart splintered as he remembered what they'd had and what might have been.
