Five things I learned yesterday

"What did you learn today?"

I ask my son that question every day when he gets home from kindergarten, and since he's only five, he actually answers me—although I suspect that when he gets a little older, the always-popular "nothing" will be his go-to response. ☺

Yesterday, as he told me about all the things his teacher had taught him, I started to think about the things the day had taught me. Although my new knowledge might not be as exciting as my son's, I do learn a few things every day. Yesterday taught me that:

1. I don't have to give up on a recipe like this one just because I'm out of cream of mushroom soup. Instead, I can make my own. It's easy to do, and there's no worry about canned soup and BPA.

2. Sometimes it's just too cold outside to make the effort to go to the grocery store, even if I really, really want chocolate.

Squirrel?
3. It's fun to discover animal tracks in the snow. (My kids taught me this one!)

4. It's heartbreaking to see a Facebook friend receive happy birthday messages from people who don't realize that she recently died.

5. The new season of Project Runway starts tonight! (I'm a little excited. Can you tell?)

What things have you learned recently?

Wishing you a wonderful Thursday!

Last Wednesday, this pile of snow was a prominent feature in our Western New York front yard:

My kids gathered icicles and planted them in this snowbank.
 I'm not sure why... ☺

Today's view—due to our recent 70-degree temperatures—is much different:

I'll admit that I don't mind the lack of snow, but my three-year-old daughter spent much of yesterday afternoon singing a song she'd made up and titled "Snow, Snow, Come back!" I can't say that I sang along, but it was fun to listen to her.

And I'm quite certain that one of these days, she'll get her wish.

Have a wonderful Tuesday—no matter what your weather!

Snow!

Today's 100 words:

Today looks to be the first day this winter that we're getting snow that sticks, not melting away immediately after falling to the lawn and driveway but remaining, blanketing, warming in the way only cold snow can warm, and I know the children will be excited when they awaken this morning, when they race to the living room window and discover that finally--finally!--the cold, white, frozen fun awaits them, and they will want to play in it, don their coats, boots, and snow pants, mittens, hats, and scarves, but it's still too early, much too early, for that.

Snow!

Today's 100 words:

It's snowing today, the first real snow we've had so far this season. I remember how excited I used to get as a kid when I saw those white flakes falling from the sky and covering the ground. I would immediately think of snowmen and snowball fights and snow forts, and my sister and I would beg our mom to let us go out and play, then spend the proverbial forty-five minutes donning snow pants and coats and hats and boots and mittens before venturing into the snow, only to come in fifteen minutes later with cries of "I'm too cold."

Cold

Today's 100 words:

The bedroom was cold. I could almost see my breath fog in front of my face, and I cupped my frozen fingers to my mouth and blew hard, trying to warm them. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and walked out into the living room. The thermostat on the wall read fifty-four degrees, and my stockinged feet ached from the frigidness of the icy wooden floor. Snow fell outside, and blankets of it heaped themselves against the doors and windows. I knew then that I would be trapped for a while, no heat, no way out.
