Trick or Treat!

Happy Halloween!

Well, it's a dreary, gray day here—and just in time for Halloween. We're supposed to get rain and high winds tonight, which makes me feel bad for all the kids who are looking forward to trick or treating. (Mine included.) Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous—sun, warm temperatures, no wind. It's funny how it always seems to work out this way. I remember very few warm-weather Halloweens from when I was a kid. Usually it rained—or snowed...

Regardless, my husband and I will be taking the kids out tonight, even if we have to shorten our route a bit. Afterward, we'll come home and warm up, and then the kids will eat some candy (a special Halloween tradition!) and go to bed. (Friday is still a school day after all!) As for me, I plan on sitting down at midnight to crank out a few words for NaNoWriMo. Cross your fingers that I'm not exhausted before that!

What are your plans for today and tonight? Whatever you do, I hope you have a wonderful Halloween! ☺

Happy Halloween to all my blogging friends!

This and that

Happy Thursday!

It's gray and rainy here—the perfect day to write!—and that's what I'll be doing when my daughter naps this afternoon. What are your plans?

I saw this sweet video this morning, and it warmed my heart. We should all be as kind as this little boy. Enjoy!

Wishing you all a wonderful Thursday. ☺

Rain

Today's 100 words:

It's raining today, one of those I-wish-I-could-stay-in-bed-and-just-forget-about-the-world kinds of days, gray, no hint of sunshine, the only sound the pitter-patter of raindrops on the window, on the roof. It's an I-want-to-just-sit-and-read-all-day kind of day, curled up on the couch with a blanket and a cup of tea or hot chocolate, letting the world go by while I live someone else's story, experience someone else's life. It's a never-get-dressed kind of day, a stay-in-my-pajamas kind of day, a day to let the world go on without me while I disappear inside myself and hide away, safe behind my own four walls.

The hidden part

A 100-word vignette:

Throughout the night, a heavy drumbeat of rain pounded against the roof and tapped a staccato beat against the windows, and Beth listened from her bed, eyes open, and watched as bolts of lightning illuminated the room, dragging everyday objects--the dresser, the lamp--from their shadowy hiding places, exposing them for what they were, and she thought about her inner self, exposed that way, brought to the light so everyone around could see the real her, the true her that she kept carefully tucked away from prying eyes, and she clenched her fists determinedly. She couldn't let that happen.

Rain

Aheila's Drabble Day prompt this week is Rain. Check out her blog for the rules.

She could feel it coming. Her old bones ached, and there was a crackling in the air. Something big was about to hit. Leaning heavily on her cane, she rose from her chair and shuffled to the window, parting the faded curtains. The sky had that greenish tint her ma had insisted foretold horrendous thunderstorms and tornadoes that tore angry paths across the fields, and the leaves of the ancient maples near the barn displayed their undersides, flashing their own storm warning. She turned away and sighed. It would be here soon. She'd lived through so many already. When would her luck run out?

Slow down

Although the day ended beautifully--warm weather and sunny skies--it started out quite gloomy, hence this morning's 100 words:

It's rainy today, dark and gray, and I don't feel like doing much of anything. I certainly don't feel like making a trip to the post office and another one to Sears, lugging the stroller out of the back of the van, strapping in the youngest, all the while getting soaked as the rain pours down. Today is a day that should be spent inside, reading books with the kids, writing, drinking hot coffee while wrapped up in a warm blanket on the couch. I welcome these gloomy days--they remind me to slow down, take time out, enjoy life.

Silver lining

Today's 100 words:

It's another dreary, rainy day here in Western New York. My husband commented on his way out the door this morning that he's beginning to think he lives on the West Coast. It's true that we usually don't get quite so much rain here. I'm not crazy about it, but I try to see the positives: the kids love stomping in the puddles, my son likes the worms and using his Thomas umbrella, and the rain cleanses the town and brings new life to the lawn and flowers--something bright and cheerful to look forward to after the storms pass.

My dream-thoughts snatched away...

I wrote this piece this morning after being awakened by the rain.

Rain battered the roof, waking me from sleep, the steady ping-ping-ping piercing through my dreams, and I sat up, confused, as I tried to piece together the source of the sound, the origin of that unwanted alarm clock that had torn me from sleep, snatching away my dream-thoughts of you and the life we had shared once long ago, before we imploded, our togetherness shattered, and found ourselves suddenly living separate lives and separate dreams, no longer breathing in sync as the rain pattered against the roof or the hot sun shone brightly through the window.
