I Hope You Dance [single] |
Many of you are probably already familiar with country singer Lee Ann Womack. I admit that country isn't my usual genre and I don't know much about Womack's musical repertoire, but she sings one song that really speaks to me as a mom: her 2000 hit, "I Hope You Dance."
I discovered the song one day just after my son was born in 2007. My little boy was finally napping, and I had logged on to the Internet to do some research. Somehow I ended up on a page that featured the lyrics to Womack's song, which I read and thought were beautiful. I searched YouTube for the video and was so moved by it that I thought I'd cry. It said everything I wanted to say to my son: all my hopes for him, all my dreams. I decided that moment that "I Hope You Dance" would be the message and the wish I'd pass down to him--and now to my daughter as well. I've included the song in their baby books, and I'm looking forward to the day when they'll be old enough to understand it and listen to it with me.
This is the video. The two young girls featured in it are Womack's own daughters.
Lyrics here.
Music is such an important part of most of our lives. What song or songs hold special meaning for you?
At one of my college jobs the played this song...a lot. I couldn't stand to hear it. Then, later that year, I heard someone perform live, and it brought me close to tears.
ReplyDeleteTV on the Radio has a song called Stork and Owl. It's a beautiful ballad, and I read that the songwriter wrote it as way to explain death to his young son. They're not everyone's cup of tea, but I get choked up each time I hear it.
I'd never heard that song before, but I just watched the video on YouTube--pretty powerful.
DeleteNice story and I always cry when I hear Luther VanDross Dance with my Father. I do like the song I Hope You Dance. I remember it from the movie The Family that Prey's when Kathy Bates was secretly hiding alzheimers from everyone and she shares that song with her friend on their road trip. Enjoyed your posting today.
ReplyDeleteThanks! That Vandross song is definitely a tearjerker.
DeleteThat is such a beautiful song, Dana, I had not heard of it before. Her daughters are so adorably beautiful!! You are so true about music playing such a part of our lives; I think we have seasons where certain songs impact us; these days I like a lot of praise and worship songs.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great day!
betty
Those little girls are so grown up now. Hard to believe.
DeleteThanks, Betty. :)
A niece sang this song at our son's rehearsal dinner. It was our wish for him and his bride. It was a surprise to her when he stood up and offered his hand to her, and then they danced. Everybody was teary. I actually changed a couple lyrics to fit a wedding/marriage. (I can send them to you, if you want.) It's a beautiful song for any phase of life, really. I love it.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know the changes you made.
DeleteYes, it really is a beautiful song. I never tire of it.
i have so many of them--but to name a few---barry manilow's looks like we made it--always reminds me of my little brother's high school graduation and i believe i can fly for several reasons---nice song--i have always liked it too
ReplyDeleteGreat songs--and very meaningful!
DeleteI love that song! I've never seen the video, so thanks for sharing. A song I really like is, The Climb, the Miley Cyrus sings. I'm not a big Miley Cyrus fan, but I sure do love that song!
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with that one, although I've heard the title. I'll have to check it out. :)
DeleteThis is a great song with a beautiful message, thanks
ReplyDeleteAndrea
Glad you liked it. :)
DeleteSuch a beautiful song that is near and dear to my heart! I love it. Some other songs that hold special meaning for me: Don't Stop Believin' (Journey), Firework (Katy Perry), and The Climb (Miley Cyrus). Great post!
ReplyDelete"Don't Stop Believin'" is a good one!
DeleteYou're the second to mention the Cyrus song. I'll have to check it out. :)
This is a very beautiful song and touching video. I have so many songs that mean a lot to me. One that is especially beautiful with incredible lyrics is "God Bless the Children" by Bruce Cockburn. In fact Cockburn does so many songs that touch me deeply. Another song he did that means a lot to me is "What About the Bond"--it's a song about marriage.

ReplyDeleteThat a beautiful song and a touching video. I haven't listened to much music for many years now. Makes me realize that I listened to most of it in the car--LOL! ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL That's where I do most of my listening. I'm always taking the kids somewhere. :)
