Those of you who are "slightly older"--like I am--probably remember the Folgers coffee commercials and their slogan, "The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup." For those of you who don't, here's a version from 1989:
Before I go any farther, I just have to say that after all these years, I still can't figure out how decaffeinated coffee wakes these people up. The smell alone wouldn't do it for me, nor would the small amounts of caffeine still found in decaf. I don't know--maybe they go to bed really early or are just annoyingly chipper people. Possibly it's because they're actors. ;)
Anyway, my question for you today is this: What's your best part of waking up each morning? Is it Folgers in your cup? Reading the newspaper? Looking out the window and watching the sun rise? Hitting the snooze button? Reading blog comments and checking your e-mail? Eating cold cereal and cursing the boss who makes you go to work so early?

Sure, there are also practical things that I absolutely love about waking up. Since I always get out of bed at least an hour before anyone else, I get to have "me time." I write or read or just sit and think, all things that are tough to do after the rest of the house wakes up and the interruptions start. And even though I'm often tired, I usually accomplish a lot in the early hours, which helps get my day off to a good start.
Lately, as the weather has gotten warmer, one of my favorite things about waking up is getting a large cup of coffee from the kitchen, then reading out on the patio in the early-morning sun, losing myself in someone else's world for a time. Bliss!
So tell me, what's your best part of waking up?
oh I'm all about that first cup of coffee :) sometimes I go to bed thinking about it, LOL it might be a problem, no?
ReplyDeleteand yup, I'm definitely old enough for those commercials and now that song is stuck in my head, LOL
LOL Not at all--it's just something to look forward to. :)
DeleteSorry about the song. ;)
I DO remember that Folgers commercial! The best parts of my morning are finishing my six mile run and seeing my girl's first smile of the day. :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you with the running! I need to start being less of a sloth. ;)
DeleteI agree with you about seeing a child's face. That's a wonderful way to start the day!
I'm more of a night person so waking up isn't usually very fun lol... but I guess my favourite moment would be waking up and then staying in bed a bit longer - all comfy and snuggled in.
ReplyDeleteI love to do that sometimes, too--especially on the weekends. :)
DeleteI love the mornings, and you're right, waking up is the best part. I love to look out the window and see what the world was up to while I was sleeping.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, and I totally don't get the decaf thing. Since I've cut out most of my caffeine I've been drinking it, but really, what's the point? It's just not the same.
I like to see what the neighbors are up to! ;)
DeleteThe quiet house.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely, isn't it? Here, morning is the only time of day when peace and quiet reign.
DeleteOMG, I totally remember the song. My sister and I used to run around singing it to my grandparents in the morning whenever they came to visit and were trying to have their coffee. I'm not sure if it was even Folger's that they drank, but we had to sing the song to them.
ReplyDeleteI love waking up to my cats snuggled up all around me; they're just so warm and sweet and cuddly first thing in the morning.
Love your story about the Folgers jingle! Too funny!
DeleteAnimals are great, aren't they? :)
For me, it's the morning walk with the dogs, followed by my first cup of coffee.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great way to wake up.
DeleteWell daggone, you took all the good answers that reflect any depth of thought. I look forward to seeing a scheduled post pop up on the screen for the first time.
ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteI've never scheduled my posts. Maybe I should try it. :)
i am not a morning person--really i am only a middle of the day kinda person--so in the morning i have to have my coffee--so i guess that is what i do look forward to and my favorite breakfast--frozen waffles----and i do admit to lately enjoying looking at comments on my blog and reading others blogs--great post!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lynn! Sounds like you have a great morning routine. :)
DeleteI do remember those Folger commercials :)
ReplyDeleteThe best part of waking up is waking up, LOL, and realizing I have another day of life here :)
The funniest part of waking up is I'm usually up first so I'll shower first. Koda sleeps in the bed with us. Most mornings even before the bathroom door closes, he has moved from the bottom of the bed to my pillow :)
The best part of waking up is checking my email and then spending time reading the Bible and praying. I should do it the other way around, but the computer calls to me :)
have a good Wednesday!
betty
That Koda is sneaky! ;)
DeleteI love your morning routine of Bible reading and praying. The computer calls me, too--and unfortunately, it doesn't let me go.
Hope you're having a wonderful day!
Hmmmm... I'd have to say right after I wake up the kids. Cause you know - there alive and well. I think my favorite part of my day is when I get to see my 2 yr olds face when I see her after work. She's so cute and excited!
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet! Kids do have a way of making the day better. :)
DeleteI like NOT having to get up early. 9 am is perfect, unfortunately I have to work 3 days a week at 8am so I detest the 6 am alarm! I think coffee is necessary for me so nobody gets hurt. Starbucks House blend. 2 cups.
ReplyDeleteOn days I don't work, sitting by the fish pond with my husband and having our coffee is the best.
Sitting by the fish pond sounds nice. I love those quiet moments!
DeleteYou named some of my favorites. My first best thing is breakfast because I'm usually very hungry when I first get up and I've got to have a good breakfast. I usually check out blog comments in the morning while I have a couple cups of coffee. Morning is a nice time.
ReplyDeleteLee
Tossing It Out
I agree. It's my favorite time of day.
DeleteDoes hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep count? I don't really like getting up on the morning. I have more time to myself in the evenings. I'm not a morning person. ;)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! I also have days when my favorite part of waking up is going back to sleep. :)
DeleteMy favorite part of waking up used to be saying the Modeh Ani prayer, which is traditionally said upon rising. I feel bad for how I fell out of the habit, since I used to love saying the words each morning, giving thanks for how my soul had been restored to my body.
ReplyDeleteThat's really beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :)
DeleteYep. I'm going to have that song stuck in my head all day today! Ha :)
ReplyDeleteIf I'm truly honest? The best part of waking up for me is when I realize I'm up too early and can go back to sleep for another hour.
It's been stuck in my head since last night. LOL
DeleteLove your honesty! :)
Loved the posting, and for me sadly it is for the coffee (TG for Juan Valdez and the coffee bean) and also well the hubby telling me to get up. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL That's not sad at all!
DeleteHmm, my best part of waking up is watching the news and weather as I eat my Fruit Loops in a moment of peace. My husband is a grumpy waker, so I just avoid him for the first fifteen minutes or so in the mornings.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is the same way. Woe to me if I try to talk to him. LOL
DeleteThanks for that reminder. Now i have that tune in my head. :) Most of the time my best part of waking up is seeing my little boy in my bed next to me. No matter what he always ends up in the middle of our bed sometime inthe middle of the night.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! LOL ;)
DeleteAw, that's got to be the best way to wake up. :)
i look forward to writing...its my time!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great thing to wake up to!
DeleteAt my age, any time I open my eyes in the morning, and discover that my husband and I are still breathing, I know it's gonna be a great day. I do love early mornings. The peacefulness, the beauty of the sunrise, the birds singing reveille. My cats running around the house like idiots ...
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful picture you paint. And the cats? Hilarious!
DeleteI'm not a morning person, so this was tough, actually. I don't relish my commute, but I do like the walk to my subway stop. The city is brighter and fresher in the morning and I like seeing everything else get going: deliveries to restaurants, shops raising the grates, etc.
ReplyDeleteOkay, maybe I'm more of a morning person than I thought. :)
Great question!
I bet you get a lot of writing ideas as you walk. I know I do!
DeleteThanks!
Does hitting the "snooze button" count? My mornings are nothing but running around like a maniac trying to get my kids out the door for school. So sleeping in is a real treat. Otherwise I like watching the sunrise and listening to birds chirp as they eat from the bird feeder.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I need: a bird feeder! :)
DeleteSchool mornings are stressful around here, too, but they're the mornings I probably most need to be up early--at least in terms of my sanity. I don't think I could get up just a few minutes before or at the same time as the kids. I need my peace and quiet in order to face the day. :)
I've never been a morning person, really. But once I'm up, I love mornings that allow me to relax and do absolutely nothing. Otherwise, there isn't much I like about waking up except smelling my Little Bean's morning hair. I'm not sure why, but I like to smell the top of her head in the morning. That's probably weird.
ReplyDeleteI think it's sweet. :)
DeleteI like you stuff, Dana! and, yes, I am another one who def remembers the commercial!
ReplyDeleteI love the morning - the earlier the better. These days I always get at least the first couple of hours to myself (with the dogs though) and I like that a lot. I enjoy some quiet reading/writing time and I always do some kind of physical workout early. Makes me feel good! I like that mix of solitude and activity.
Thanks!
DeleteYour morning routine sounds perfect. :)
I get the best hugs from my kids first thing. :)
ReplyDeleteAww, sweet. :)
DeleteDana, this is a wonderful question. For me, it's the quietness of the world. The house is quiet. The street is quiet. The sun is coming up. I look forward to my coffee (cream, no sugar) which I make in a French press. I like reading the paper, reading the Bible and checking my email. I also enjoy running in the morning before work. I'm a morning. This is my favorite part of the day.
ReplyDeleteI love the peace, too. It's a wonderful time of day. :)
DeleteI am an early morning person. It is MY time of the day! The very best part of it is taking the cozy off my tea pot and pouring my first cuppa.
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful! That's a great thing to look forward to. :)
DeleteBeing greeted by a new day...life is good, and each day makes it just a little bit better:)
ReplyDeleteI love your attitude!
DeleteI walk my Chiweenie Frankie Chewbacca every morning. My favorite part is when I first get out of bed and he sits on the foot of the bed and stretches across my husband's legs. He's the cutest dog ever, and he gets so excited for our walks. :)
ReplyDeleteAw, he sounds sweet! I love his name. :)
DeleteThe best part about waking up?
ReplyDeleteOh, that's easy.
At my age, the best part about waking up is...waking up.
I hear ya! ;)
DeleteGotta have my coffee. :)
ReplyDeleteLinda: That's one of my morning must-haves, too!
ReplyDeleteWithout question, the Sunrise!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful sight!
