Car talk: Oh, the things kids say!

It's no secret that kids, especially young ones, can get restless when they're forced to ride in a car for hours at a time. Mine, ages five and just-turned-three, are certainly no exceptions. Fortunately—for them, at least!—they've come up with several statements and questions to help pass the time. Here are their ten favorites. How many have you heard?

Ten Things My Kids Said During Our Four-Day Car Trip:

1. Are we there yet? (This one is pretty standard among kids. I think it comes pre-programmed.)

2. How much longer? (A variation of number one, this question requires more than a one-word response from Mom and Dad and therefore ranks as Slightly More Annoying on the annoyance scale.)

3. How many more Little Einstein's is it? (My kids love this show, which is roughly a half-hour long, so instead of saying that we need to drive for eight more hours, we'll say, "It's only sixteen more Little Einsteins." Somehow, this sounds better to the kids. Whatever works...)

4. I feel poop coming out. (Said—often—by my just-starting-to-get-the-hang-of-potty training three-year-old immediately after we had strapped her into her car seat. Most of the time it was a false alarm.)

5. I have to pee. (Usually said as we're pulling away from a rest area.)

6. I don't wanna go home! (Apparently, my three -year-old really loved her vacation—a lot! She was like the Energizer Bunny in her repetition of this one. She kept going and going and going...)

7. I want French fries! (I think this one is also pretty universal. My kids only have fast food when we're on vacation, so we heard this a lot during our trip.)

8. I wanna get out. (Uttered by the kids every half-hour or so. I could have set my watch by them—unfortunately.)

9. I'm cold. (The three-year-old. We turned off the air-conditioning.)

10. I'm hot. (The five-year-old. We turned on the air-conditioning. NOTE: Numbers nine and ten were always said at the same time.)

So there you have them—a few of the many sentences my kids uttered in order to drive us crazy pass the time. Is it any wonder we only take long car trips once a year? ☺

Happy Thursday!

  1. Actually, I'm the one who usually says, "I have to pee."
Which is exactly why I know where all the rest rooms are-ranked in order of cleanliness-from Connecticut to Florida.
    Our favorite. Okay, MY favorite:
The Smyrna Delaware Rest Stop on Route 13 in, you guessed it, Delaware.
Doesn't get mobbed by tourists and their rest rooms are remarkably fart-free. Although there aren't any Cinnabons.
To keep the kids occupied, Mrs. Penwasser and I bought the kids their own portable mini-DVD players. With headphones. So, I didn't have to listen to frikkin' Disney flicks, non-stop.
Sadly, they have their own cars and are off to college in three weeks. Sniff...sniff.
Luckily, I told them where all the rest stops are.
    Gotta go now.
    I have to pee.

    1. Haha! I appreciate the restroom recommendation. Does the whole fart-free thing apply to the women's room as well?

Sorry about the lack of Cinnabons—I think...

Hubby and I also bought the portable DVD players, but without headphones. Why? Because we are crazy.

    2. I don't know about the Ladies Room. Golly, I didn't think you people farted...?

  2. As I read the above, I feel I need to clarify....
NONE of the rest stops I've visited have Cinnabons in the rest rooms.
I hope there were no misunderstandings.

    1. I'm so glad you cleared that up. I was starting to wonder about you. (Well, I was continuing to wonder about you, but...)

    2. If there WERE Cinnabons in the bathroom, I hope they at least wash their hands.

  4. Loved the posting and just wait until they are teens and you try and take them for a road trip! :) I just finished a posting on our disastrous road trips yesterday, with teens in the car! I haven't scheduled it to post just yet. :) Enjoyed reading your posting!

  5. This is great. We got to go through this too on our trip this past week. Mine are 5 & 8, and this still happens. Of course, then there's the 'he's looking at me,' whine. Maybe next time I'll hang a little curtain between them.

    1. I remember taking part in the "she's looking at me" whine. So glad I have that to look forward to with my kids! ;) I'll have to try your curtain idea.

  6. Hehehe! That was funny. Thank you for the laugh. :) My son has just learned the "Are we there yet?" Sometimes he'll say it as soon as we leave our neighborhood. Our next long four hour trip will be during the Labor Day weekend, and now he's potty training. Yikes!

  7. Those sound familiar! Mine always asked "how many kid shows" it would take to get there.

  8. I'm glad to say I haven't heard #4.

  9. Oh, it's so hard when they are that small! My 8yo still complains but my 15yo is pretty good. You'll get there!

  10. #4 is too good. It's always my 18-year-old who says #5. The now 6-year-old and almost 13-year-old never do. I don't know how, but they hold their water forever. Glad you guys had fun. :)

  11. #5 is SO my children. Also, "He hit me!" Or "She's looking at me." Yes - roadtrips can be SO fun. ;)

    1. I've haven't gotten the "He hit Me!" and "She's looking at me!" yet, but I suspect they're both in my future. ;)

  12. Measuring duration by TV programmes is genius. I have Quiet Child and Very Noisy Child. VNC says everything that comes into his head, there is no internal monologue at all - so it's always a lucky dip as to what random witterings we're going to get.

One statement that drives us mad when we actually get to the destination is: Can we come back again? Our response: Enjoy being here now!!!

    1. My husband was the one who came up with the TV show idea. I'm so glad he did!

I've heard the "Can we come back again?" question, too. Like you, we also say "We're here right now. Have fun!"

      Kids! ;)

  13. I can remember saying some of those! We were also fond of “what town are we in”. I think my parents deserve some kind of medal for not throwing my sister and me out on the side of the road when we were kids. Most of the time I was carsick and my sister was whining about how unfair it was that I got to do everything and it was her turn to be carsick. (She whined a lot!) When that wasn’t going on we were busy fighting over everything.

    1. My sister and I fought, too, and our poor Grandma had to sit in the backseat with us. I'm still laughing about your sister's wanting her turn to be carsick. Too funny!

  14. Mine are 17 and almost 22 and if we take a road trip, they STILL say those things.
