T is for (Reality) TV

Happy Tuesday!

I love reality TV—good reality TV. I'm talking about the kinds of shows that feature people who are working toward obtaining a serious goal, something they've dreamed about doing for most (if not all) of their lives. Some of my favorites are Top Chef, Project Runway, the now-canceled Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, The Voice, and American Idol. The men and women participating in these shows have dreams—to be a great chef or fashion designer, to become the next big thing in the art world, to rise to the top of the music charts—and I admire their determination to go through whatever obstacles they must go through to make those dreams come true.

(Now if only they made a reality show about writers working toward book contracts. I would definitely tune in to that!)

How about you? Do you watch any reality shows? What do you like (or dislike) about them?

The following video clip is from The Voice. It features Judith Hill, just one of the singers hoping to make her dream come true.

My daily haiku is up at the Pulitzer Remix site. You can find it here. Many thanks to those of you who have been taking the time to read and comment. I'm very grateful for your support!

Wishing you all a fantastic Tuesday. ☺

  1. I really don't watch TV...and the little I have seen of reality is just the junk...and it is too drama filled for me...too much like where I used to teach.
    Happy "R" Day!

  3. I don't tend to watch any reality shows because I get too anxious and nervous due to feeling the people's nervousness.

    1. That makes sense. Some of those shows are pretty stressful, especially the ones in which people compete.

  4. Tuesday has been a bit lousy for me and not finished yet. I admit to watching some reality TV like the X factor and will say there were a few good acts on Saturday.

Sorry today isn't going well. I hope things get better. :)

  7. I like reality shows but they changed too many judges on me for the singing ones. I like House Hunters, Pawn Stars, Storage Wars and some of the none competitive ones best.

    1. Those are good ones, too! I especially like Storage Wars. Those people crack me up. :)

  9. I'll watch the reality programmes at the beginning with auditions, such as Britain's Got Talent and X Factor but I do find they are so edited that nothing really is real anymore. Unfortunately I can't view the video as 'the Uploader has not made this video available in your country.'

    1. Aw, that's too bad. That singer is pretty great, in my opinion.

I like the auditions shows, too—especially the ones for American Idol.

  10. I used to watch America's Got Talent but I missed last season.

I always tune into The Biggest Loser though :)

  16. It's nice to see people pursuing their dreams! I honestly don't have much time to watch reality TV shows. I'm too busy pursuing mine!

  17. The only reality tv shows I watch are So You Think You Can Dance and The Amazing Race. They keep me entertained and interested. I love the art of dancing and love to travel, therefore these shows appeal to my interests more than others shows. Although, I've been watching Man Vs. Wild on Netflix lately. It is amazing, but sort of gross with what Bear does to stay alive.

    1. I don't think I could stomach Man Vs. Wild, but I do like to catch The Amazing Race when I can.

I HATE most reality shows...I glimpsed one awful show "Honey Boo Boo" and if that show isn't child abuse- I'll eat my hat!
We watched the first Survivor show years ago and never again. It's so manufactured and fake.
I like the talent shows but dont appreciate how mean the judges are- ergo: I don't watch any of them at all.
Meanwhile I'll scamper over to your Haiku for today. Now THAT"S a pleasure!

  20. I'd love to see a reality show about writers. I used to watch Survivor every year, but I've weaned myself off that. I don't catch any reality shows these days. My TV watching time at night has been traded for writing time!

  21. I know this will Shock Your Socks Off, Dana....I am a 'Ridiculous Reality' Survior watcher...have been since it's beginning. I do admire those who strive to fulfill their dreams on Voice, Idol, Runway and others, and would watch them if they didn't conflict with NCIS, Elementary and LLCoolJ.

What it boils down to, is I can't sing, can't dance, so so with Designer Clothes, but boy howdy, I can start a fire, build a leanto, kiss butt and eat bugs...I am a Survior!!!

  23. A reality show for writers would be cool. I’d record that series. I like watching American Idol and The Voice. I'm routing for Candace on AI. I like Judith on the Voice too, but I kind of think it's an unfair competition because she's not really an amateur, she was MJ's background singer.

I love love LOVE Duck Dynasty!

  26. I tend to watch 'Reality TV' of the paranormal kind. I like the science they are bringing in now more and more, in the efforts to prove and to disprove.

I don't watch much Reality TV, as a rule though, but then again I really don't watch that much television at all these days. If I do, it's probably Law & Order or Masterpiece Classic -love the period series they do. :)

    2. I see your point. I'm just thinking about how much I hate talking to people and prefer to be completely alone, especially when I write. I guess I would be pretty boring to watch. :)

    3. Oh, I'm like that, too. I couldn't be on the show; I'd just like to watch other writers. :) I like to be alone, and I like my quiet. Having cameras around would drive me insane!

  28. I admit I like The Voice, but I'm not the biggest fan of reality tv. I think the Bachelor and Bachelorette is the worst. It never lasts and just is dumb to me.

  29. I like the X Factor. Or I liked it last season, with that crew of judges. I'm not sure how I'll feel if that changes. I also like the new line up for American Idol. (I'm totally a Kree fan. I loooooove her.)

My boss was watching Dance Moms in the office, though. I wanted to break the TV and arrest many people.

  30. I can't do the competition style reality tv shows. It's too easy for the producers to turn it into a bloodbath to get ratings.

  31. Hello, my friend! Amazing, the number of comments on your post of "reality shows"... Yet, we are all drawn into the reality of those shows, are we not? I watch some faithfully: The Voice, American Idol, Hoarders, (sometimes Dance Moms - but that one is painful to watch), sometimes Toddlers and Tiaras - another painful one to watch, X-factor, America's Got Talent (although, I wait until they get finished with auditions for that one, because some of the stuff they audition is horrible). I am a Kree fan, on Idol,as well as Rachel (who posted before mine). Well, that's enough of my rambling. Best regards to you. Ruby

  32. Hi, Ruby. There are definitely a lot of good reality shows, but the ones that are bad (like the ones you mentioned) are truly horrid.

I appreciate your comment. Thanks for stopping by!

  33. My favs: Top Chef and Project Runway. I used to watch American Idol but I can't tolerate Nicki Minaj so I had to pass this year. It's woefully unfair that HER dreams came true. Yeah, I'm mean today.
