My guilty pleasures: TV edition

Confession: My name is Dana, I'm a thirty-something wife and mother, and I love watching teen dramas.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you're probably aware of my Gossip Girl obsession. I actually caught on to the show late—during the fourth season—but when I saw my first episode, I was hooked. I Netflixed all the seasons and rapidly became a CHAIR fan. (CHAIR is an acronym made from the names of two of the characters, Chuck and Blair. Some fans prefer DAIR—Dan and Blair.) Chuck and Blair have been an on-again, off-again couple, but I'm really, really hoping they end up together. (Yes, I root for TV couples!)

Gossip Girl will be ending after next season, so just know that there will be tears in Dana's house. ;-)

Since Gossip Girl isn't airing right now and I've already caught up on the previous seasons, my current guilty pleasure is Dawson's Creek. I watched a few episodes of this show when it aired from 1998 to 2003, but I was busy with my teaching job then and didn't have a lot of time for TV. Now I'm watching the episodes through Netflix, and I've just started season four. I know how the series ends--I did catch the finale when it aired--but I'm still enjoying seeing how the characters ended up where they did.

And on this show, I'm definitely a Pacey and Joey fan!

What TV show is your guilty pleasure?

  1. We really don't watch much TV; the reception isn't great, and we don't have cable. We only set up the antenna about a month ago when I decided I really wanted to watch the ABC special about Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. I will watch The Dog Whisperer anytime we're at my parents' house (they do have cable), and I'm a huge Jeopardy fan. Dorky, I know!

    1. I wouldn't throw anything! I've never seen that show, but who knows? Maybe I'd like it, too. :)

  3. What ever happened to Kerr Smith? He's the only one on Dawson's that didn't do anything else that I know of. My sisters LOVED the Creek, but I didn't have tv at the time and only watched sporadically through them. I do remember the last episode though, and now that you made me watch the intro. I really want to watch them all!

My guilty pleasure is Gilmore girls. I have seen all the episodes in order at least 10 times. I put a disc in and just watch until it's over and in goes a new disc. I don't know what exactly it is, but I never tire of it. And my BFF LOVES her teen shows too, so don't feel too bad. She started with 90210 and just won't quit!

    1. Huh. I'm not sure what happened to him. I'll see if my sister knows. She used to be up on all things Dawson's Creek. I hope you watch it; we can talk about it!

I've never seen Gilmore Girls. I'll have to put it in my Netflix queue. The old 90210 is great! I haven't seen the new version. I wonder if it compares...

    2. I never thought of Gilmore Girls as a teen show. To me, it was just a comedy-drama mostly set in a small town filled with extremely quirky people.

    3. I've never seen it, so I can't classify it. Soon, though. :)

    4. Most unfortunately you can't get Gg on Netflix or Hulu, but you can order the discs used for super cheap off Amazon or through a store that sells used CDs and DVSs. That's how I got mine. I don't know if it's really a teen show, but I always thought it encompassed several genres and since the daughter goes from 15 to 22, I figured that counted as sort of teen. Also, you can get it online at the WB, but I'm not sure if you can pick episodes to watch or if they only have certain ones on there. ABS Family may have some too.

    5. Thanks! I'll probably order them or see if the library has them.

  4. Dawson's Creek is still one of my favourite shows ever, even though the last season was terrible, and then it broke my heart. I didn't see the finale until about a year ago, and I genuinely cried my eyes out lol!

  5. As far as I'm concerned, Chuck and Blair belong together! They're the perfect couple, I wish they could see that! I've seen the first 3 seasons but then I fell behind, I'm going to have to catch up if it's ending soon! :)

    1. I agree: they're perfect for each other. They better end up together!

  6. I don't watch Gossip Girl, but I've certainly watched my share of shows that a lot of people think of as being for younger viewers. In fact, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Pretty Little Liars are two of my all-time favorite shows, and I don't feel a bit guilty or embarrassed about it, either.

I also watch some shows that are supposedly age appropriate. It's all about the subject matter, cast, and writing.

    1. I agree. As long as the writing is good, I can watch just about any show.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is another one I haven't seen. So is Pretty Little Liars. I'll be done with Dawson's Creek soon, so maybe I'll add those two to my queue.

    2. I highly recommend them, but only if you're into those genres.

    3. I'll give them a shot! :)

  7. I watched The Gilmore Girls because my cleaning girl brought over the DVDs for me and I got hooked. But I've never seen any of the shows you mentioned.

My guilty pleasure TV shows are because I watched them from the first year they came on--Survivors and Big Brother. Sad, but true. And I watched All My Children from it's second year till it ended last year--so about 40 years. (I missed some of it in the years before VCRs--LOL!)

    Enjoy your guilty pleasures! ;)

    1. I still watch Survivor when I can. (The kids are usually watching one of their shows at that time.) I wish Gossip Girl would go on for forty years! ;)

      Thanks, Rita. Enjoy your shows!

  10. I use to watch Survivor all the time, but I've worked it out of my system. Now it's those reality shows like Hoarders and other frightening mental illness documentary shows. I just can't force myself to turn the channel!

  12. I love, love, love "Secret Circle": same creator as "Vampire Diaries", but it's about witches. Deliciously melodramatic and drinking game worthy! ;)

    2. I watched that too but didn't get into it as much as The Vampire Diaries. Unfortunately, it won't be back for a second season.

  13. I will never admit to watching a show about certain housewives in the LA area . . . I just happen to be at the gym sometimes when it's on the cardio tv. Right.

  14. Duh, Friends reruns. Vampire Diaries, Secret Circle, Revenge, ..... The list goes on.
I have never seen Gossip Girl, Dawson's Creek or Gilmore Girls. I do watch a lot of bad tv including the Bachelorette and Bachelor.

  15. I'm feeling old. I never got into Dawson's, Gilmores, Buffy, or Friends. I was still working, I think. Years ago, I loved Home Improvement...still catch it on reruns. Two years ago, I got seriously hooked on LOST. Oh my God. I bought all six seasons and watch the thing once a year. I thought the writing was really good. And talk about hot...Jack AND Sawyer. :-)

    1. My youngest stepson tried to get me interested in Lost, but I just couldn't get into it. I have watched a lot of Home Improvement, though! :)

  16. I honestly don't watch much TV. But I do like to read tween books. Rick Riordin has some good ones.

  18. Did you like Glee? I never watched either of these shows you mentioned, but have heard of them. We watch whatever hubby is watching, usually NCIS or something on the cooking channel. Son got us watching a few episodes of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia with Danny DeVito; its kind of silly, dumb, but has a few laughs here and there :)

I've never heard of the last show you mentioned. I'll have to check it out. :)

  19. I have to admit that I almost never watch tv nowadays. Maybe if I have to write a script or something, I'll have justification. But nowadays I have so many other things to do that even when I'm sitting in front of the tv, I feel guilty because it's empty hours running away. Sigh.

    1. I love your idea of exercising while watching TV! My friend does that and says the time passes more quickly. I usually read a book when I'm on the treadmill, but that becomes difficult once I start walking faster. :)
