If we're going to be BFF, you should know...

I need some of these!
(Photo by Petr Kratochvil, courtesy of Public Domain Pictures)
♥ My feet are almost always like ice cubes, even when it's 95 degrees.

♥ I can't swim. I never had the opportunity to learn, which is ironic since I grew up along one of the Great Lakes. My husband is a fish, and I'm adamant that both my kids learn to swim. (My five-year-old has already taken lessons.)

♥ I have never dyed my hair, although I suspect that day is coming soon. (Darn aging!)

♥ I love meatloaf but can seldom make a loaf that stays together, even though I let it rest before cutting it.

♥ I love dresses and would wear them every day if I could.

♥ I hate matching up my husband's socks. They all look the same to me.

♥ I've never left my kids with a babysitter. (This explains the next one.)

♥ I haven't been to a movie theater since 2006.

♥ I must dip my pizza in hot sauce.

You'll never find one of these in my hand!
(Image courtesy of Sanja Gjenero, rgbstock.com)
♥ I never iron. If something is wrinkled, I just toss it into the dryer for a few minutes and hope for the best.

♥ I always have laundry waiting to be washed.

♥ I put chocolate chips in a bowl and then dip a spoonful of peanut butter into them. Yummy!

♥ I was shocked a few years ago when my doctor told me that I'm 5'3". I always thought I was taller.

♥ I've been wearing glasses since I was five.

♥ I am a middle child, but there are thirteen years between me and my oldest sibling, so I've always felt like the oldest.

♥ I've never been able to fold a fitted sheet.

♥ I have two stepsons who are in their twenties and live in New York City.

♥ I am a perfectionist, which can be a blessing but I've found it's most often a curse.

♥ My favorite color is red, and my favorite number is five.

♥ I don't like sharing my food. (Okay, I'll share with my kids, but don't ask me to pass my plate around in a restaurant. If you want what I have, you should have ordered it!)

And now I leave you with this scene from Friends--the one where Joey and I have something in common:

What about you? As your blogging BFF, what do I need to know?

  1. Now I have a visual of you in a restaurant, yelling at your kids like Joey. So funny. Okay, so now I see that we do have some differences. My feet are usually cold, but my body is usually hot (at least it was until I started losing weight). Also, I swim like a fish, color my hair monthly because the gray took over, make a pretty good meatloaf (do you use an egg in it? that may help), and don't like hot sauce. Now, I also love dresses, have only used one babysitter while I taught a class, don't care much for movie theaters so I don't go unless it's something fabulous or I take the kids, nevereverever iron, have charcoal gray as a favorite color and 4 as a favorite number, and ignored the need for glasses until I was 17 and nearly blind. I do not, however like sharing food as is evidenced by my need for weight loss. I hate to order a small appetizer or dessert for a table of 8 people and then get one bite when what I wanted was half. Usually I just pass because having so many siblings taught me that sharing is for chumps.

    1. I'm the same way about the hot/cold: my feet are often cold, but the rest of me is hot.

Yep, I use an egg in the meatloaf. I think I just have to learn to get the consistency right.

I guess we do have some differences, but I think we can still qualify as BFF! :)

About the theater: I know. One of these days, I need to find a sitter. Yikes!

    2. Okay, listen up, speaking from "the other side" of parenting, you are damn right - you need to find a sitter. The best deal for us was the very rare occasion when our kids went somewhere else for the afternoon or overnight, We had (have?) very little money but it was heaven to be alone in our house - snuggle in the kitchen sans children, watch a movie on the VCR and not be interrupted, eat pizza and ice cream and NOT have to share! You don't have to go places but, trust me, if you don't have alone time sans children you are going to forget why you married this guy.

    3. Graciewilde: We're looking, but I won't feel comfortable until the kids are just a little older. I like the idea of staying home with the hubs while the kids are out. Thanks for the advice. :)

  3. So enjoyed reading this; did learn a lot about you; too funny that you thought you were taller :)

Do get out and leave the kids; it is good for you all as hard as it is to find a babysitter and to leave them, but it is good for them to know that mommy and daddy can go out without them and that mommy and daddy will come back to them too :)

    1. For years, I thought I was 5'4½" -- I would always include that extra half an inch. My face probably hit the floor when the doctor told me I was only 5'3"! Am I shrinking already? ;)

My husband and I definitely need some time away. If our families were here, I'm sure we would have no problem leaving the kids with them. I guess I'll need to start the (scary) search for a trustworthy sitter. Yikes!

    2. AND, That Corgi makes another good point - your kids need some independence - they need to experience life w/o you around. It might be hard for you to let go of them for a few hours, but it pays off in their confidence. One thing we did was trade with a trustworthy couple or two - they would keep out kids one Saturday afternoon and we would keep their kids on another weekend day - no money.

      Delete
    3. Graciewilde: I like your idea of trading weekends with another couple. Maybe I'll mention that to my friend.

  4. i loved these---very interesting--that you have two grown sons----i think i am secretly only 5'3" too---i can never fold a fitted sheet either---i am so not a perfectionist--even though i am the youngest of three girl--i feel like the oldest sometimes too--at least when it was just my younger brother and i at home---and i will not even drink after anyone, even my kids--except at the movies--when frank is too cheap to get me my own drink and we all three share a huge one with 3 straws----i hope they don't get out-lawed--or at least then i can have my own drink--and get a babysitter---but i was the same way haha--plus no one wanted to do it!

  7. What a fun post! I'll just respond to a few of your facts.

I had a pair of toe socks back in the '70s. They would really annoy me now.

I've done the peanut butter and chocolate chip thing, but lately I've been getting a spoonful of peanut butter and loading it up with butterscotch chips.

I'm not sure how old you are, but it's possible that you've shrunk a bit. I've lost about half an inch due to osteopenia.

    1. Peanut butter and butterscotch chips! That sounds great. :)

I'm in my thirties. My doctor says I probably haven't shrunk--yet. My grandma, who was probably once as tall as or a little taller than I am, was under five feet when she died, so I'm probably heading the same way. :) I guess for years I just thought I was taller than I actually was.

      Delete
    2. I had toe socks back in the 70's too - they sucked. YOu couldn't actually wear shoes or slippers with them b/c they were too bulky and they isolated the toes so that the toes didn't warm each other. I'm just saying.....

      Delete
    3. I wore them with shoes, but yeah, my toes were probably cold.

    4. Graciewilde and Eliza: Valid points. :)

  8. Hehehe! That was fun! I don't iron or match my husband's socks. After so many years of him telling me I'm not matching them right, I leave them to him. They all look the same to me! I use to be cold all the time until I had my son. Now I'm hot all the time. I miss being cold.

    1. I also make my husband match his own socks. The blues and blacks and browns all look the same to me for some reason. :)

I would rather be cold than hot, too. My feet are the only part of me that gets cold. The rest of me is usually roasting!

    2. Ditto on the sock matching thing. I don't. These days he does more of the laundry - he's retired and I am so. not. retired. Match away, buster!

      - When I'm reading or watching a film, don't talk to me..EVER
      - I prefer to give than receive
      - I'm handy with a screwdriver and known my way around a computer
      - I know how to cook, but prefer not to do it every day
      - I snore

swore I would never dye the hair, but I have
hate ironing, press clothes tightly as I fold to "knock out" wrinkles
    loathe (not love) meatloaf
can't fold a fitted sheet... can anybody?
I like to think that I'm taller than I really am (5'2")

    We could still be BFFs.

  11. So many comments!
    - I used to have socks like that, but now I have thermal ones which actually have a TOG rating!
    - When you mentioned meatloaf, I thought you were refering to the singer!
    - I love dresses too, but usually forget I have them and end up wearing jeans everywhere.
    - I actually go so far as to un-pair Hubby's socks if I find a better match.

  13. My feet can never get warm in the winter, hence my ever-present Uggs (boots and slippers)
I had to take swimming lessons as a kid and I did the same for my kids. It's never too late to learn.
I have my hair highlighted (bleached) every 9 weeks. It would be dishwater colored if I didn't. You are lucky to have good hair!!
I don't ever make meatloaf. We have it at work and it stays together so I guess there is a secret. I could ask.....
I love dresses but never wear them because I have ugly legs and cankles.
I buy all the same socks for my hubby, some are gray and some black. I don't fold them though.
We had my mother-in-law to watch the kids when they were little. It was a blessing.
Movies are too expensive anyway. Buy the dvd (cheaper) and order a pizza (with hot sauce for dipping:)
I dip mine in blue cheese dressing. Healthy.
Downy wrinkle releaser and a water bottle are my way of ironing.
    Always laundry.
My husband dips Hershey Kisses into Jif and calls it a Reeses.
I thought I was 5'8. I am only 5'7 and a half so I can never be a super model. Snort.
I have trifocals I am supposed to wear daily. I wear them in bed to read but never outside the house. They are cute but I am vain.
I am the oldest of 5. I always felt like the mother becuse mom worked a lot. They always hated me.
    Neither can I.
Do you get to the City to see the boys?
    Me too.
I like green and blue. And the number 2.
I don't mind sharing as long as other share too!

    1. That's what I need: Uggs!

I keep thinking I should take lessons, but I feel so darn old. Maybe I can just get hubby to teach me.

I'm starting to find a few gray strands, though. Eek!

I have no calves, but it's hot here in the summer, so I wear dresses anyway...

My hubby has brown, blue, and black dress socks, and I can't tell them apart. I just throw them in the drawer now and let him deal with them.

I wish we had family close by. I probably would have gone to a movie by now. A few times a year we'll get DVDs, but we like different movies, so it's hard to agree.

Blue cheese dressing is probably the only one I don't like. ;)

      Thanks for the ironing tip!

      Yes...always laundry.

      I like your husband's version of a Reese's.

      Yeah, me either. :)

I can't see if I take my glasses off--or at least I can't see very well.

My sister is about two and a half years younger thank I am. She couldn't stand me some of the time either.

Yep, and I really don't care that I can't fold them.

Not very often. We haven't been there in years. :(

I would love not to be one.

  14. Goodness! I loved reading this, but I am honestly too tired to think of a list of things to tell you. Let me go back and look...
I dyed my hair blonde for several years as a young adult because I was born a white haired little Swede whose hair turned to dishwater blonde or light brown--but my younger brother and sister retained their blonde hair. :( At 61 I still have no grey--just blah light brown.
I've worn glasses since third grade when I was seven (a year ahead) and should have had them sooner. Terribly nearsighted--like 20/1000 without my glasses--can't see the E. Can't be corrected to 20/20, but maybe 20/60 or so. Stigmatism makes it hard to focus, though.
I like variety so much I don't think I've ever had a favorite color or number.
Have some OCD tendencies, but not in everything. Can wear my favorite mismatched socks with no problem--LOL!
Will cut back on food to buy art & craft supplies, but you would never know it to look at me--ROFL!
Have a super Wednesday, Dana! :)

I love food. I think I'd probably sacrifice other things--like clothes. LOL

Hope you had a great day!

  15. I don't share food, either! I really relate to that one. I never iron, but I never have to. Clothes don't wrinkle like they used to when I was younger, thank goodness. 2. Yeah, I;m with Heather here - I love to mess around with the color of my hair - and it's length -- keep 'em guessing. In its natural state it is a middle brown - nothing spectacular - for some years I went lighter and played with variations on that but for the last maybe 6 or 7 years, I have gone darker and I love that - sometimes add a bit of purple in there or magenta - stuff that is so not natural - gotta say, the middle school kids love it!

I am so used to wearing flip flops that when I have to wear those hideous closed-toe shoes, I feel like I am suffocating. One thing about me that most people don't recognize: I have the biggest ankle muscles you will ever see. Before I realized they were muscles, I thought that I had tumors on both of my ankles:)

Evening is my favorite time of day; right before the sun goes down. I love to think deeply, but my mind is fuzzy alot of the time! I love all kinds of music and I dislike cold cheese (maybe it's the consistency or something since I'll eat grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese on mexican food, etc... 2. Well, Sharon, yes those of us who commute by bicycle do know that it is dangerous. I have the scars to prove it. It is however, really terrific when drivers can be patient and not plow into us. There can be room on the road if we watch out for each other. The last time I was hit I was attempting to stay as far to the right as possible but the guy turned right directly in front of me. I went to the hospital. He drove away. Later, I was found at fault for the accident since I was NOT in the lane of traffic but trying to stay out of the way of cars. Now I ride right in the middle of the lane as if I am a vehicle. I get honks and impatient looks from SOME drivers but I haven't been hit since.

Now I just foil my hair now and then, leaving some of my 'real' color in (which is turning gray). Eventually I am going to let the gray win out. Gray can be very beautiful (or so I tell myself!).

  31. You sound like my sister with the height thing! She's almost five inches shorter than I am, but swears we're practically the same height. I don't enjoy matching my husband's socks, but I have to be the one to do it, because he's color blind, so it can be really bad if he does it himself! I love the number 5 too. I've found that using lean (at least 80% lean) ground beef helps the meatloaf stay together, as well as using bread. I usually tear 1 - 3 slices of whole wheat bread up in it, and it seems to stay together. I'm totally with you about sharing my food. I'll share with my husband, but that's about it. I just can't stand the thought of other people's forks or fingers on my plate. If I don't kiss you, I don't eat or drink after you!

    2. I saw where you mentioned on your blog that you like the number five. Why do you like it? I just remember being five years old and really enjoying that age. :)

Thanks for the meatloaf tips. One of these days, I'll figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I agree with Eliza: your last sentence says it all!

    3. I don't remember the age of five being all that great (I think four would be my favorite childhood age, with six being the worst, so five was pretty uneventful between those two ages), but I like multiples of five a lot. And I've always had a thing for nickels. I like how they feel in my hand, how the word sounds, and how they sound when they clank together. I used to absolutely refuse to spend my nickels, and still find myself hoarding them sometimes.

  33. Hmmm those are really interesting. I'll think of a few you should know...

    1) If it's my birthday and you don't know what to buy me, you can't go wrong with Lindt chocolate. Especially the dark ones.
    2) I should have been born in January, but my mother birthed me almost a month earlier because my father had mandatory military service. He left on duty the day after I was born.
    3) I actually love nougat more than chocolate.
    4) I have phobias of deep water, heights, needles and escalators. All of them are controlled to at least some extent.
    5) My hair used to be 1 meter long. I'm 1.7 meter tall. Then I permed my hair and 90% of it broke off.

      2. That's wonderful that your father was able to be there for your birth.

      3. I have to disagree with this one: I'm all for the chocolate! ;)

      4. I have claustrophobia.

      5. I always wanted long hair, but mine is so baby fine.

It was great getting to know more about you!

  34. Okay, Dana, clearly I enjoyed your post! It was fun to be lazy this morning and just enjoy the post and then make some responses. I liked getting to know you better.
Here are a few things about me:

I Love wearing dresses - well, really skirts and tops - dresses tend to be too tricky to pull off size wise.
I am smack dap in the middle - four older, four younger siblings - but oldest daughter so that got things a little mixed up - the 'rents had traditional roles and so did I - housework and child care. Oh boy.
I do not like hot sauce or anything that is more than mildly spicy. I end up giving my food away half the time in restaurants b/c it is often hard to find something not spicy - or cheesy - don't do much cheese either - never on a sandwich but will enjoy a good pizza (NOT a cardboard one)
I LOVE color. Period. Could not confess to one favorite. Could. Not.
My VW beetle's name is Oskar.
    My iphone is Wilson.
I wouldn't mind living in NYC for six months.

    1. I love that your car and phone have names! I haven't named either of mine.

I would love to live in NYC. I feel so creative when I'm there.

You and my husband would probably get along great. He also dislikes spicy food. I've had to learn to cook with only mild spices and then spice up the food on my own plate. Sometimes I'll accidentally add a little too much pepper or maybe a tiny bit of red pepper flakes to the food, and hubby's eyes will water and he'll break out in a sweat. Meanwhile, I'm pouring more spices on my food and wondering how he could possibly think that what I made was spicy!

  36. I'm so glad there is another human in the world who doesn't iron. I actually had to go buy an iron last summer to iron on a decal for a vacation bible school t-shirt. Until then, I hadn't had an iron since college!

    1. I dread the day when I have to unearth the iron to do something like that! ;)
