I'm a writer and stay-at-home mom now, but in my adult years I've also held the jobs of journalist, college English professor, and freelance copy editor. These professions were all good fits for me, but they are definitely not what the child-me thought she'd be doing when she grew up. Back then, I told people I wanted to be an archaeologist or maybe an orthodontist, but what I really wanted was to become an entertainer--specifically a singer like Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. I do love to sing, but I have to admit that I'm very happy with my non-famous, ordinary life and can't imagine living any other.
What did you want to be when you grew up? Is it the same job you're doing now?
I always wanted to be a singer too. It's a pity I have such a terrible voice and get shy in front of a crowd.
ReplyDeleteI have a passable voice, but it's nothing to *sing* about. Ha! I'm not great with crowds, either--except for when I was teaching. Then I was in my element.
DeleteI work in a bank (on maternity leave at the moment and love it!) and it's definitely not what I wanted to do.. I always wanted to be a journalist or a writer, which is wy I enjoy blogging so much I suppose!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new baby! :)
DeleteMany of my family members have worked in banks: my grandma, my mother, my sister, my brother. I applied for a job in one once, too, but I didn't get it.
I don't know what I would do if I couldn't write. The great thing is that no matter what job we have, we can still write in our "free" time. :)
As a child I saw Live Aid and wanted to work in Africa helping the children (I was 8 and was ready to go then!), then I thought maybe a paediatrician and then a teacher. I achieved two of those when I worked as a volunteer teacher in west africa for a couple of years after graduation, oddly I taught science including biology. But I have never really felt a calling and am still waiting for that eureka moment when I know I am doing the right thing for me. I did fancy singing 'girls just want to have fun' though and I was a big Madonna fan!
ReplyDeleteI understand what you're saying about realizing a calling. I'm nearly 40, and sometimes I feel like I haven't had that eureka moment yet...
DeleteLove Madonna--especially those old songs!
same here--i was writing music and singing and acting----don't really miss it though as i have had lots of opportunities to do some of it in a small scale, that suited my kinda lazy attitude towards it all--now i am a wife mom grand-mom and facebook "specialist" and occasional blogger--until this a-z thing :)
ReplyDeleteThat all sounds amazing! I can play a couple of instruments, but I've never written music or sung in front of anyone but family and the unfortunate people who have been trapped with me in a car. My foray into acting was short, ending with the junior/senior play in high school. (Up the Down Staircase--I had a tiny role.)
DeleteI love that you're taking part in the challenge! I followed your blog and hope to begin reading your entries later tonight. :)
I wanted to be a poet and an artist...
ReplyDeleteHmmm!
Poet is definitely out and I think stick figures are never going to quite take off!
Lx
LOL Stick figures are about all I can manage as well. :)
Deletea charlies angel! then a singer, wish we had american idol back then! and a teacher. i'm a teacher at least =)
ReplyDeleteAmerican Idol would have been great! It seems like a lot of us wanted to be singers. :)
DeleteI wanted to be a model. And then an artist. It wasn't until my 20s that I found my passion for writing, and for helping women birth. But, always, from the very beginning, as long as I can remember, I've wanted to be a mom. And that's my favorite job of all!
ReplyDeleteYou're right--being a mom is the best job!
DeleteThank you for letting us get to know you better. What a wonderful idea. Seems no one is clicking on my site with this campaign. I've tried to do my part, but oh well. I've always wanted to be a writer, but put it aside to be a mom. Now that they are grown, I'm writing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! I've been trying to work my way through the A to Z sign-up list. I think it might take me forever! LOL
DeleteIt sounds like you were able to fulfill both of your dreams. That's wonderful! :)
I had always wanted to be a nurse. But, the kids came along so fast. I also wanted to be a singer, but I can't sing worth beans. I'm very happy being the writer that I am.
ReplyDeleteLOL I'm not the greatest singer, either!
DeleteIt's nice that life tends to work itself out; even though we're not doing exactly what we thought we'd be, we're happy, and that's what's important. :)
